Is cheese bad for cats?

Cheese is not inherently good for cats. It may give your cat an upset stomach or digestive issues.

Cats are "obligate carnivores," meaning in order to stay healthy a cat's diet is primarily meat, according to Purina. Cats cannot produce enough enzymes to process milk or dairy properly. So, cheese is not the best treat choice.

Some cats are lactose intolerant and have dairy allergies, according to Hill's Pet Nutrition. For these kitties, even the tiniest bit of cheese could cause problems. If you cat has consumed dairy, they may have an allergy if they experience:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Itchy and/or red skin patches
  • Hair loss

If you cat has any of these symptoms, you should consult with the veterinarian.

Cheese also has high fat content and calories which can lead to weight gain, according to Chewy. It is best to avoid feeding your cat cheese, although it is safe to do so.
